26 September 2011

Dear Parents / Caregivers,

Due to Term 4 being so short this year, we are doing a newsletter now instead of the beginning of next term, to let you know of some important dates etc.

TERM DATES

Term 4     Tuesday 25 October  -  Friday 9 Dec  (7 weeks)

Start date for 2012 Tuesday 31 January

Session Times  -  The session times have changed and are now as follows:  8.15am - 12.30pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings.  1.00pm - 3.30pm Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.  8.30am - 2.30pm Wednesdays.  Please keep as close as possible to these times.

Sunhats  -  You are reminded that we have a Sun Safety Policy which states that staff and children will wear sunhats when outside in Terms 1 and 4 of each year.  To help us comply with this Policy please ensure your child has a named sunhat in their bag.  Hats should be full brimmed or have a peak and flaps.  You may find it easier to have a hat especially for Kindy, which can then be left in your child’s bag. It would also be helpful if any visitors to the Kindy could also wear sunhats when outside.

Kind regards,

Patsy

 REMINDERS

W-SITTING  -  “W-sitting” is a term to describe a sitting position in which a child sits on the floor with their bottom between bent legs and their legs rotated so they are facing away from their body.  Their legs form a “W” shape on the floor.

W-sitting should be discouraged because of the long term effect it could have on the muscles and joints of the back, hips, knees and feet.

If you would like more information on this, please see Patsy.

NEEDS  -  Thank you for all the items (plastic bags, boxes, containers etc) you bring in for us to use at kindy!  Please keep it up.

URGENT NEED  -  If you have any computer paper (any size but in particular large pieces) or know of a supply, please let us know.

WEBSITE  -  The Morrinsville Baptist Church has a website (www.morrinsvillebaptist.org.nz)   with some details of the kindy in it, including the latest newsletter.

SAFETY  -  Please be careful when using the kindy gate and ensure that no other children leave without their parents.

FIRE AND EARTHQUAKE DRILLS  -  We practice these each term with the children so that staff and children are familiar with what to do in such emergencies.

In the event of an earthquake, the children are taught to get down on the floor and curl up like a turtle or to go under a table.

On hearing the fire alarm, the children are taught to evacuate the building and go to the Assembly point for a roll call.

LOST PROPERTY  -  Please check the white container above the painting shelves for recent lost property - it may surprise you what you find!!  The naming of clothing, shoes, hats and cups is certainly helpful.

NOTICE BOARD  -  Please remember to read the notice board at the door.  This may change during the week so be sure to read it each time you come.

PROFILES  -  We are working through some changes to the way we do the children’s profiles.  These are now available in the mat room for you and your child to read.  Please feel free to comment on your child’s learning.  You may like to write a brief sentence about how proud you are of their achievements, progress and development.

If you have any comments or concerns about your child’s progress, please discuss this with the staff.  You may also wish to make a formal appointment to sit down and discuss your child’s progress with the staff.

This information is from Waikato District Health Board

There is an outbreak of measles in the Waikato, which seems at this stage to be centred on Te Awamutu and surrounding communities.

  • The incubation period for measles is usually 10-12 days but may be longer.
  • Measles is a severe illness which begins with fever, cough, sore eyes, and generally feeling unwell. THE RASH DOES NOT APPEAR FOR SOME DAYS, and the case remains unwell for several more days after the rash appears.
  • People with measles can spread it to others from the beginning of their illness until four days after their rash has appeared.
  • People who may have been in contact with measles will be protected if they have had two doses of Measles Mumps and Rubella  (MMR) vaccine. Check with your doctor or nurse if you are not sure if you or your children are protected.
  • Anyone in contact with a case who is not immune or not immunised must stay away from work, school or preschool, stay at home and avoid visitors for 14 days, to avoid spreading the illness.
  • Anyone who thinks they or their child may have measles should call their family doctor or Healthline for more advice. If visits to the doctor or laboratory are needed, please call in advance so contact with other people is minimised.
  • Healthline’s phone number is 0800 611 116 or

We will notify you if we have any confirmed cases of measles at kindy.
