Alpha

Alpha is for everyone. It is especially appropriate for people asking the big questions of life but is also great for spiritually refreshing and renewing people who already belong to a church.

Alpha is held at MBC in our new lounge periodically throughout the year. Each session starts with a light meal and is followed by a talk on the particular topic for the week. This is then followed by discussion in small groups where everyone is able to share their thoughts or questions in groups that provide a non-threatening environment.

If you missed out on the last Alpha don't worry - we will be running it again soon

Alpha Format

Alpha looks something like this:

We also have an Alpha Weekend or Day Away in the middle of the course.

What you could do next...

Pray – please pray for those planning and running Alpha. Pray for the Group Hosts, for the team helping with hospitality, catering and cleaning, and pray for friends, family, neighbours and colleagues not involved in church who you can invite and bring along.

Participate – we want everyone at MBC to experience Alpha so that the whole church has confidence in what it is and what it can achieve. So the first thing to do is to sign up to do Alpha yourself. If you have already done the course we need help with hosting, hospitality, cooking, cleaning or transport. See Ginni or Phil if you want to get involved.

Provide – we would love to offer Alpha FREE to everyone. This means we need people to help by providing food and drink, and contributions to cover the costs of course materials, manuals and advertising. Please see Phil or Ginni if you can help in this way.

Why Alpha for MBC?

Alpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a non-threatening and low key way that is relaxed, friendly and fun. More than 14 million people in 163 countries have done Alpha in churches, homes, schools, universities, the workplace, and even prisons. And many people come to faith through it.

For us, Alpha is more than just a course in Christian basics or a nifty evangelism idea. It is a first step to renewing our commitment to sharing our faith and to making disciples within our town and district.

Alpha is no substitute for personal participation in sharing our faith. But it provides us with a key tool to reposition our church and our small groups for effective outreach without losing sight of our call to grow people to maturity in Christ. As Philemon 6 suggests; sharing our faith is a critical part of gaining a full knowledge of Christ. Alpha helps us share our faith even if we don’t consider ourselves to be evangelists.

Our desire is for the whole church to do Alpha and to invite friends and contacts to enjoy Alpha as well. And whilst this is only step one in our discipleship process, it provides that essential starting point and the momentum we need to become a truly missional community of faith.
